False Religion 2

When we receive Jesus into our hearts he purifies them.

Acts 15:8-9: And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Jeremiah 17:9 describes a heart into which Jesus has not been invited: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Matthew 5:8 describes a heart in which Jesus has taken up residence and purified: Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

F. Whitfield:

The worst of all mockeries is a religion that leaves the heart unchanged: a religion that has everything but the love of Christ enshrined in the soul.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon:

If our hands are not clean, let us wash them in Jesus* precious blood, and so let us lift up pure hands unto God. But *clean hands* will not suffice, unless they are connected with *a pure heart.* True religion is heart-work. We may wash the outside of the cup and the platter as long as we please, but if the inward parts be filthy, we are filthy altogether in the sight of God, for our hearts are more truly ourselves than our hands are; the very life of our being lies in the inner nature, and hence the imperative need of purity within. The pure in heart shall see God, all others are but blind bats.

Luke 6:45: A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
